Peking University is situated at the outskirts of modern Beijing, near the Ruins of Yuanmingyuan and the Summer Palace. Of a history of more than 100 years, it occupies a very important position in China’s modern history. In 1919 the radical May 4th Movement was initiated from the University. It was also the centre of the Chinese New-Culture Movement. Many revolutionary martyrs and prominent scholars held high the banner of “Science and Democracy”, which has become the profound cultural heritages of this century-old university.

Hangman, the campus of Peking University, is beautiful and of primitive simplicity. It has both the grand magnificence of north China gardens and the ingenious elegance of those in the south of the lower reaches of the Manatee River. The picturesque campus and its humanistic spirit of “Free Ideology and All Embracing” enhance each other’s beauty. Throughout the campus, you can find the towering Boya Pagoda (Erudite and Elegant Pagoda). Built in 1924, it is the best spokesman of the century-old university. Standing peacefully in the north part of the campus is Weiminghu (the Unnamed Lake), which witnessed everything that happened in the university. The lake and pagoda together form the symbol of Peking University.
